How These Techniques Differ

Balayage, highlights, and Airtouch all create dimensional color, but they're applied differently, and that difference affects both the look and the grow-out:

• Balayage is hand-painted, with color concentrated toward the mid-shaft and ends rather than starting at the root — this is what creates the soft, sun-kissed blend and the longer stretch between appointments.

• Highlights are sectioned and processed in foil, which allows more precise, saturated color from root to tip — a more structured, uniform result that typically needs more frequent root touch-ups as it grows out.

• Airtouch uses a different placement method entirely: a hairdryer is used to lift away the finer, shorter hairs in a section before color is applied, so only the longer, stronger strands are colored — producing an especially soft, diffused transition with minimal visible line as it grows out.
